Bilz News from the Pewz – May 24, 2009

Today was a most interesting service at All Souls followed by most enjoyable evening at Brian and Jackie Moore's 3rd Annual Memorial Day Cookout…

But first – Today, Che Sahara was initiated into the rolls of those who lead our services.  As you remember she delivered a memorable talk earlier this year.  Today she lead the service.  I'm now looking forward to having her at the podium again, because she just naturally brought a calm presence to the entire service that I wish we could all accomplish.  She had a way of being that made the whole service seem so – just so, and her readings and music were wonderful for the day, the speaker's topic and the theme of the service.  Thank You, Che!

Our speaker today, Dr Christopher Phelps, spoke about the framing of the U.S. Constitution.  I have always been proud to be of the nation that invented personal freedom for the individual, as defined in the Constitution, but I was so VERY impressed and touched to know that, although the creators of the Constitution were for the most part Christian, the were strongly against any relationship between the church and state – for the very reason that tying them together in any way would weaken them both.  He talked about that from both sides of the argument – the way that a religious element in government would weaken the government – and – how it would also weaken the effectiveness of religion.  The big answer is – the United States was formed by a group of people who were, for the most part, deeply religious – many of them Christians.  Those very same people very carefully created a government that had no say in the religious lives of its citizens.  WOW!!  As I said to Dr Phelps after church – I don't get tears in my eyes from our speakers, much, but when I saw and understood the enormity of what he said – I did.   Thank You to Dr Phelps!

Tonite, Brian and Jackie hosted about 30 UUs and friends at their house as a covered dish.  We all had a lovely time eating (can you believe it), talking (what?  UUs? talking?), playing games and just enjoying each other and the evening.  Thank You, Brian and Jackie!!
Thank You, All!
See you in Church!
