There's a big hole in my spiritual life and I ask for the prayers of those who are so moved. I was formerly a member, and a very comfortable one, of Mansfield's Central United Methodist Church which as you may know closed its doors a few years ago. It was far from fundamentalist, for example two of the men who were most active in church affairs never mentioned, but everyone knew, were gay. Now I'm attending another UMC which, though a loving group of people, leans sharply right (some, at least). I can't accept the idea that the Bible is the unerring word of God; I believe I can be a better Christian without worshipping who I think is described as a cruel God. Do you have any help for me?---Bob

This morning, during the Adult Religious Education program "Renewal", we viewed a brief video about the devastating practice of mountaintop removal. This practice is currently being used to access coal in Appalachia. It uses dynamite to literally blast off the tops of mountains in large areas of West Virginia, Kentucky, and other states. During the class, there was pretty extensive discussion about ways that we can respond to this issue both as individuals and as a congregation. There is a great resource for those who wish to learn more or take action. Go to http://www.ilovemountains.org/ At this site, you can view, using Google Earth, some satellite pictures of the extent of this type of mining. There are stories from the people directly affected by mountaintop removal. You can also find out which mountaintop removal mines are supplying coal for your electric utility. Finally you can take action to change public policy regarding mountaintop removal.
